While it may be just a minor “thang”, for me it was an excellent move. I’m talking about repairing the loose molding on my 56 Plymouth. Which molding? On the Belvedere, there’s a horizontal stainless steel molding that attaches to the body just below the trunk opening.
The truth is that I had never really noticed the molding until one day at a car cruise the driver’s side end of the molding popped loose. I was able to snap it back in place,, but onlyi temporarily. I feared the loose molding would fall off, so I used clear packing tape to secure it temporarily.
I finally got around to removing the molding and checking out the mounting clips. The truth is that of the six clips that held the molding, only two were intact. Two of the others completely disintegrated; the other two were only just partly there and had mostly rusted away. The upside of the rusted clips is that they left stains on the backside of the stainless molding which helped me know where to place the new clips.
The new clips were nearly identical to the originals and were purchased off eBay. I shot video of the project, hopefully I’ll post it on YouTube.
CRUISE SEASON ARRIVES. Unfortunately, I have not begun the body repairs to my Plymouth yet, and with the cruise season upon us, I don’t think I’m apt to start until the fall. I have a number of updates I need to tackle first, and those will keep me busy. I’ll return with updates on what I get done.
