I figured it was time for an update on the air cleaner project. The last work I did on it was to give it two nice, wet coats of 1k primer surfacer. The primer looked great — until the next day or so. Then I had areas where the paint was lifting, cracked and flaking off.
Apparently, when I lay a heavy coat of 1k primer, the solvent goes all the way to the base metal and then dries from the lowest substrate level “up.” The solvent in the 1k primer is causing some of the original paint still on the air cleaner to react and it ends up lifting the paint or causing a crack. Plus, the solvent ended up causing a large area of polyester 2k glazing putty to lift — a large area lifted right down to the original metal.
I have sanded down all the chips and flaking paint and have reapplied the glazing putty. However this time, I’m not going to apply 1k primer; I’m going to apply a 2k epoxy sealer. Two coats of sealer. Then I am going to use a 2k primer over that. I’m hoping the epoxy will prevent lifting of the original paint or the filler.
I had planned to perhaps use my old school 1k primer on the Plymouth. I think what I’m going to do instead is to paint each panel or series of panels with epoxy sealer (after the metal work is done), then apply my body filler and primer.
I don’t remember having issues with lacquer primer causing original paint to lift when I was operating in the shop. I always used sealer prior to the final paint stage, but near had paint wrinkle or react when coated with primer. Of course, “back in the day” we never had gravity feed spray guns, they were all siphon feed. I wonder if the old school guns were lighter on the solvent level than gravity fed.
QUICK JACK AWATS. I have had the QuickJack 5000 system assembled for a while but have yet to raise the car. Might take care of that tomorrow.
WHISKEY CITY CRUISERS. Big cruisers news this week. The Walt Wagner Co., owners of the Kentucky Home Square, home of the monthly Whiskey City Cruisers cruisers, have advised Jim Boles that the cruisers are no longer welcome there.
I don’t know why the sudden ban on the cruisers, but I have my suspicions that the company did not like the 502 car club showing up in the parking lot without permission.
When they show up,, the block off a large part of the parking lot with orange cones and caution tape, in essence, claiming as “theirs.” Its a much younger crowd, and they seem to also be a rowdier crowd. I think the fact they just showed up without asking permission pissed them off, and they decided no group can use the lot.
Jim Boles said he would check with the judge about using the justice center parking lot. That’s not a bad location, its just the way its divided up into parking spaces makes it less than ideal.
So what other places might work? High school parking lot (city or county); county fairgrounds; or perhaps an industrial parking lot close to town. I need check with Jim about how I can help. I sent him a Facebook message, but he seemed confident he could get the justice center parking lot, but we’ll see.
